Gillespie Will Now Attend Parliament

The threat of legal action towards ex-principal, Iain Gillespie has diverted the flight path of answers, and they may now land within Holyrood.

Having recently turned down an invite to appear before the Scottish parliament regarding the university crisis, both Ian Gillespie and Jim McGeorge have now agreed to appear before the education committee after parliaments spring recess.

This comes after Gillespie had turned down an invitation as he was away travelling. He will now appear alongside Lady Wendy Alexander (former vice principal), Amanda Millar (former court chair) and Peter Fotheringham (former finance chief). It is still unclear whether Jim McGeorge (the universities chief operating officer), will attend. However, the Courier reports that Douglas Ross MSP (Chair of the committee) stated that he had received ‘positive responses’ in reply to his requests for all 5 to attend.

During a prior hearing involving the current university management, questions were raised regarding the potential for negligence, and even criminality to be established regarding the handling of the university and the subsequent financial crisis it now finds itself in. Neither suggestion was met with definitive answers. However, neither were met with strict denials.

The upcoming committee hearing is likely to take place after the parliamentary recess. The Jute Journal will be sure to keep you updated on key dates and times. Staff, Students and all those involved with and rely on the university, directly or otherwise deserve answers.
